Br. Martin Schmitz

Br. Martin Schmitz

On September 15, the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, Marytown celebrated the 74th anniversary of its founding. Marytown is the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe run by the Conventual Franciscan Friars. Its mission is to serve the Gospel and the Church by forming Eucharistic disciples in prayer, evangelization, works of mercy, and Marian consecration in the spirit of St. Maximilian Kolbe.

Br. Martin Schmitz, OFM, who is a Resident of our Home, was with there for the celebration. Br. Martin is the only living member of the original community founded in Crystal Lake, IL on September 15, 1948. He shared some of his thoughts and reflections about the early years of the community, following the homily during the special Mass.

God bless you Br. Martin for your life of service to the Lord and your great witness to the Franciscan way of life! We are blessed to have you as a part of our St. Joseph Home Family.
