Helping Those in Need
We are often the recipients of generous people who help us. It is a true joy for us to be able to help those in need. Recently, Sr. Paul organized a clothing drive that was held in our lobby for several weeks to collect items for the migrants that are arriving in the Chicagoland area.
The response from Resident, staff and volunteers was overwhelming! A van and a truck filled with adult and children clothing, along with blankets and sleeping bags were collected and delivered to the Family Empowerment Center who provides relief to migrants in the Chicago area.
Sr. Paul, Sr. Maria Grace and Maria (our pre-postulant) went along to help unload. Sr. Paul, recounts her experience “As fast as we were unloading things, migrants were taking them. You could see them, leaving with the suitcases, clothing, and other items that we brought as quickly as they came in. This is the real deal. The people are living at police stations, and literally arrive with nothing. Many are being exploited, taking jobs for two dollars an hour, and having no idea how cold Chicago will get.”
On November 5, 1963, President John F. Kennedy in his Thanksgiving proclamation encouraged everyone to “gather in sanctuaries dedicated to worship and in homes blessed by family affection to express our gratitude for the glorious gifts of God; and let us earnestly and humbly pray that He will continue to guide and sustain us in the great unfinished tasks of achieving peace, justice, and understanding among all men and nations and of ending misery and suffering wherever they exist.”
Sixty years later, his words as still pertinent today. As we give thanks for all of our blessings this Thanksgiving, let us also continue to pray for peace and an end to suffering in the world.
