Cinco de Mayo
One of the great things about St. Joseph’s Home is the multinational heritages that we celebrate. Our St. Joseph’s Home family is a mini United Nations, with Residents, Little Sisters and staff hailing from Britain, Colombia, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Philippines, Poland, Mexico, New Zealand and of course the United States. Each person brings a special piece of their tradition to create our own St. Joseph’s Home traditions which we embrace and celebrate together.
Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. While it is a holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage.
In honor of Cinco de Mayo and with the weather finally warming up, we took the opportunity to gather outside and try our hand at a popular Mexican tradition – hitting a piñata. Who would have guessed that our face mask could double as a blindfold?
It took several Sisters, Residents and employees to break our colorfully decorated donkey – even our visiting friend, Lincoln the sheep dog barked his support. Determination and some heavy hitters finally released hundreds of pieces of candy! Each was gathered up and distributed to everyone.
After our pockets were filled we went back to enjoy some delicious fish tacos prepared by our dietary staff.
May all your Cinco de Mayo holidays be filled with good friends, celebration and candy!
