The Parable of the Good Samaritan was the theme of the Holy Father’s message on the 2013 World Day of the Sick. For the past 20 years, the Church has celebrated the World Day of the Sick on the Feast of our Lady of Lourdes, February 11th. Pope Benedict, quoting John Paul II, who instituted this World Day of the Sick in 1993 said ,“This day represents for the sick, for health care workers, for the faithful and for all people of goodwill “a privileged time of prayer, of sharing, of offering one’s sufferings for the good of the Church, and a call for all to recognize in the features of their suffering brothers and sisters the Holy Face of Christ, who, by suffering, dying and rising has brought about the salvation of mankind”
His further comments, “On this occasion, I feel especially close to you, dear friends, who in health care centers or at home, are undergoing a time of trial due to illness and suffering. … ‘You are not alone, separated, abandoned or useless. You have been called by Christ and are his living and transparent image”, were especially poignant in light of Our Father’s decision to step down because of his deteriorating health.
In celebration of the World Day of the Sick, we had a special Mass and Anointing of the Sick for all the Residents on Monday, February 11th. Later that afternoon, Little Sisters, staff and Residents gathered for a Rosary Procession around our Chapel and vestibule. Afterwards, each Little Sister of the Poor and staff member was invited to have their hands blessed and anointed. This represented a renewal of our dedication to serve with dignity and Christ-like care each of our Residents.
As we begin our Lenten journey, we especially pray for our Holy Father, our Residents and all those who are struggling with illness.
