A Celebration of Heritages

  • June 6, 2011

St. Joseph’s Home celebrated National Nursing Home Week with Heritage Festivities.  On Monday, May 23, the Residents attended a Travel to China Presentation.  A PowerPoint picture history and culture presentation began the afternoon.  Following, Michele Marvin, a sixth grade student at St. Theresa School, shared all her “artifacts” from China that her dad has brought home from business trips. The afternoon concluded with tea, almond cookies, and fortune cookies. The Residents were hoping that their lucky number would be nine!

Tuesday was game day! The St. Joseph’s Women’s Auxiliary and Residents teamed up to play Heritage Wheel of Wisdom. Our world travelers had an easy time answering questions and racking up points for their team.

Wednesday was rained out as students from St. Theresa School were to bring their Heritage Project posters to share. However, a group of Residents were able to go to Superdawg Hotdog Restaurant to enjoy some American food!

The highlight of the week was our HeritageFest. Employees set up tables with artifacts and food from their native country. Ten countries, Italy, Ireland, Hungary, Peru, Mexico, Poland, France, India, Philippines, Bulgaria, and Germany were represented. The food was great, the music and dancing were fun, the comaraderie of employees, Residents, and Little Sisters made the day truly memorable.

Employees and Residents enjoyed an ice-cream social on Friday. And to conclude the week, Saturday afternoon the Residents were entertained by Grupo Folklorico Quetzal/Mexican Dancers. The Residents enjoyed the colorful costumes and the great dancing.
The Residents had a wonderful week of festivities and are looking forward to what the plans are for next year!
