Let’s Go to the Beach!

  • July 28, 2016

By Juleana Beutler, Hospitality Intern

On a day that most people dread, Monday, we set out zealously to Crystal Lake. The day was sunny, with a pleasant cool breeze. To see such a diverse group of young and old; Sisters, Residents, and volunteers alike, all gathered at the beach, is certainly not an everyday sight.

Many people were understandably curious, and came immediately to inquire on the Sisters and their work. Others smiled from a distance, visibly enjoying seeing such a lively group. With our boom box playing the timeless oldies, and our chatter and teasing echoing through the beach, it was a true testimony to Jeanne Jugan’s vision. Hearing such laughter and tittering, one would have thought we were another elementary group, instead of a group consisting primarily of the aged.

Residents who were usually sedentary, were hurrying to see the water! Sister Agnes, was singing and dancing away in her wheelchair, greeting every passerby she met. The picnic lunch eaten, some relaxed under the shade, while others; like Busia, Catherine, and Edith, headed to the shoreline. Words cannot describe everyone’s glee, as the wonderful lifeguards then brought out this remarkable wheelchair, made for the sand and water. Residents, who would normally have to watch, were able to actually be wheeled straight into the lake! It was indeed a well appreciated blessing!

After that, paddleboats were rented and a group of Sisters and volunteers set off excitedly, some more competitive than others. The weather was so lovely, and the day so well enjoyed, time elapsed rather quickly, and people were sad to go.

The day was truly a God send; an unfailing example of the undeniable joy and grace our elderly bring to us! Numerous individuals came forth on several occasions, to offer assistance, guidance, and express gratitude for the beautiful work of the Sisters. Throughout the day, God openly showed, in countless little ways, the unfailing goodness of people still today. Praise God, who is able to do immeasurably more than I could ask or imagine! (Eph.3:20)
